SIIRI Seminar Series for Women in Science 2024: Kick-off with Prof. Dr. Cornelia Lee-Thedieck
At the beginning of the seminar on May 22nd, 2024, Ms. Bärbel Miemietz, the former Equal Opportunities Officer at Hannover Medical School, who continues to support SIIRI with her expertise, provided an introduction to the legal framework regarding diversity and equality in Germany, particularly the Anti-Discrimination Act (AGG). Ms. Miemietz emphasized the importance of this law in the professional context and explained how it contributes to promoting equal opportunities and diversity in science.
As the keynote speaker of the evening, Prof. Dr. Cornelia Lee-Thedieck, director of the Institute of Cell Biology and Biophysics at Leibniz University, continued the seminar series with an inspiring 45-minute lecture. She spoke about her personal career path, providing valuable insights into the challenges that women, in particular, face in the academic system and the solutions she found for herself. After her lecture we had a lively exchange and discussion with the audience. The participants could ask questions and share their own experiences. This interactive session offered a valuable opportunity for direct conversations and networking among the participants.
