Medical implants are an essential solution for improving the quality of life for millions of people. However, they are not without risk: complications occur in up to 20% of endoprostheses each year, potentially affecting their positive outcomes. To minimize these risks and enhance the safety of implants, research at the Niedersächsisches Zentrum für Biomedizintechnik (NIFE) in Hannover has now received significant funding. The German Research Foundation (DFG) is providing approximately 12 million euros to the new Collaborative Research Center Transregio 298 – SIIRI for the next four years.

In an exclusive interview with VDI, Prof. Meike Stiesch, Prof. Hans Jürgen Maier, and Prof. Alexander Heisterkamp explain the goals and challenges of their research. They provide insights into the development of innovative technologies, such as autonomous detection systems and self-reacting implants, which aim to significantly improve the long-term safety and functionality of implants.

Read the full interview to learn more about these groundbreaking developments and the future prospects of implant research.
