Expert lecture by Prof. Meike Stiesch as part of the MHH Patientenuniversität
On April 16, 2024, at 6:00 PM, the lecture by SIIRI speaker Prof. Meike Stiesch, head of the Department of Dental Prosthetics and Biomedical Materials Science at MHH, took place as part of the Patients’ University. Within her lecture titled “Gesunde Zähne – Gesunder Körper: Der Einfluss der Zahngesundheit auf die Allgemeingesundheit”, Prof. Stiesch explained the far-reaching effects of bacterial biofilms in the oral cavity on general health.
She described how biofilms change over the course of life and the role they play in the development of systemic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Particularly interesting was the connection that bacteria from the biofilms can enter the body via the bloodstream and trigger inflammatory processes that may lead to the development of chronic diseases.
The lecture was aimed at patients who wanted to learn more about the connection between oral health and general health, as well as medical professionals.
