Smart minds – smart implants: the 2nd International SIIRI Symposium in Hannover
In January, SIIRI hosted the International Symposium in Hannover for the second time. Falko Mohrs, Lower Saxony’s Minister for Science and Culture, opened the event on January 24. In his welcoming speech, he emphasized the outstanding importance of the research network. After further words of welcome from LUH President Volker Epping, MHH President Michael Manns and our spokesperson Meike Stiesch, two days of intensive scientific exchange began.
Like SIIRI itself, the symposium was characterized by interdisciplinarity, which was reflected in the wide variety of topics. From implant-associated biofilm infections to advances in implant technology, the influence of gender in biomedicine, digital implant lifecycle management (DILM) and the social acceptance of new procedures, the symposium offered a comprehensive view of current research areas.
The event facilitated an interdisciplinary and international exchange. Experts from the fields of materials science, medicine, engineering and other related disciplines came together from the Netherlands, Israel, the USA, Poland, Australia, Turkey and from all over Germany (Regensburg, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Karlsruhe, Göttingen, Heidelberg, Aachen and Hanover) to share their perspectives and work together on solutions to existing challenges. In addition to the professional exchange, the symposium also created space for informal conversations and networking during round-table discussions and, of course, the evening get-together.
An important part of the symposium were the poster presentations by the doctoral students, who were able to hone their skills in explaining their own scientific findings to an interdisciplinary audience at the preceding SIIRI Winter School. The two best posters of the symposium were awarded prizes and we congratulate the winners Amy Seidel (1st place) and Valentin Hagemann (2nd place) on this success.
We can look back on two successful days with excellent speakers and interesting presentations and look forward to deepening the contacts we have made.
